We spent a week on Captiva Island for Spring Break. It was an amazingly beautiful place. I had been there once about 15 years ago but I don’t recall it being as pretty as it was! We rented The Cupcake House in the heart of the action on Captiva but on a very quiet street just about two blocks from the beach.
The beach was never crowded so we didn’t have to get there early. We usually arrived around 10 am and stayed until early afternoon. The water was beautiful and not too cold! The beach had so many shells and the waves weren’t rough! So, pretty much it was perfection.
If you need a break from the beach then let me suggest a few more things to do on Captiva and Sanibel Islands. We rented bikes from Finnimore’s Cycle Shop on Sanibel Island.
Their customer service is great and they have very reasonable rental rates. We rode four miles down to the lighthouse. There is a wonderful bike path along the main road that is mostly shaded. There isn’t too much to see at the lighthouse but it was a nice ride there and back.
We also visited J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
When we were researching our vacation Ding Darling was listed over and over as a must see place. So, of course we wanted to see it. We paid the $5.00 to drive through at our own pace vs doing a tour. We stopped along the way to check out different things but really we weren’t that impressed.
It was pretty and peaceful but it wasn’t off the charts fun for any of us. There are other areas where you can rent canoes or kayaks but we weren’t interested in that. For the minimal charge of $5.00 it’s worth going to see, but in my opinion it’s defiantly not an all day event or one of the best things to do on the island.
We did love the Sanibel Farmer’s Market! It was one of the nicest farmer’s markets that I have been to. It is open on Sunday mornings from November through April and is located outside of City Hall. I would highly recommend the market! We all had a great time and found lots of great food there!
Captiva is such a walkable island that we just enjoyed walking around everyday to check out the beautiful homes.
On one of our walks we found the Captiva Chapel by the Sea. It’s very pretty and secluded yet right by the ocean.
Right next to it is Captiva’s Historic Cemetery.
Dining options are abundant also! We dined at The Bubble Room, Cantina Captiva, The Green Flash, RC Otter’s, Key Lime Bistro, Latte Da and Provisions!
