We took a day trip to Chattanooga to attend a car show. We drove up early to check out the Riverwalk before the show. I love to explore any city via my own self guided walking tour! I think it’s the best way to truly get to know a city.
I really liked Chattanooga before this weekend but I must say that I adore it now. It looks like such a nice place to live. I was so impressed with how walkable the downtown area is and how it easily connects to places further out via the Riverwalk.
We parked at the Chattanooga Rowing Center Park on Riverside Drive. The parking lot is next to Boathouse Rotisserie & Raw Bar. We didn’t dine there because it was so early in the morning but it looked very nice.
We started about two miles outside of the Downtown area and walked into the city. The trail goes through marshy areas with the river slightly in view.
It goes through parks and neighborhoods so the scenery doesn’t get boring.
The trail has lights along the way so I would imagine it would feel safe if it were very early in the morning or near sunset.
As you approach Downtown there are bridges that go over four lane roads / freeways. You can also take the stairs down at this point if you would like to go over the Veterans Bridge.
However, further down the Walnut Street Bridge looked more pedestrian friendly. The beautiful building in the picture above is the Bluff View Bakery. I would like to note for the first time ever I didn’t stop at a bakery. This simply means I will need a return trip when I have more time to do a walking / dining tour.
This part of the Riverwalk goes through the Bluff View Art District. It is filled with restaurants, art galleries, a bed & breakfast and a coffee shop.
You will approach The Hunter Museum of American Art. There is a wonderful glass bridge to cross over to get to the Walnut Street Bridge or to continue into Downtown.
We decided to take the very cool winding sidewalk down and back up just because it looked cool.
Due to our schedule we turned back to where we started. It was a four mile round trip and lovely the entire way. We drove downtown on our way to the car show and it was filled with people walking and biking along the river. There is a parking lot near the downtown area if you prefer to start your walk there.
After the Riverwalk we went to the car show that was held at the First Tennessee Pavilion.
I have heard wonderful things about the Chattanooga Market but did not realize it is located at the Pavilion on Sundays.
Since I love historic buildings I thought I would share this picture. This building is located next to the pavilion.
